Laser is an acronym whose full meaning is Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation, i.e. the amplification of light by induced emission. In practice, this is a coherent monochromatic beam of light with a very high energy density. This allows the laser beam to melt almost anything, making it ideal for metalworking. An important feature of laser machining is the low heat input, consequently minimized deformation, and after welding, the applied filler material can have a very high hardness (60-64 HRC = 700-800 HV). This makes it excellent for repairing various hardened tools. This is precisely why many toolmakers and tool repairers maintain good relationships with laser welding companies, as in many cases a minor mishap can be easily and simply repaired.
